Chiapas amber pendant with two insects, a fly and a winged ant, wrapped in macrame.

This piece captures a real moment from the past: a hunter fly and a flying ant were trapped together in the resin, creating a unique scene from the ancient ecosystem.

 

Main insect: 🪰 Robber fly (family Asilidae)

Also known as "assassin flies"

Very characteristic features are visible:

  • Elongated and robust body
  • Long legs with spines (for catching prey)
  • Relatively large head
  • "Aggressive" appearance (typical of predators)
  • Wings folded over the body

🧠 What this insect did

These flies were:

  • 🦟 Active predators
  • Hunted other insects in flight
  • Used their proboscis to inject enzymes and suck their prey

 

Secondary insect: 🐜 winged ant (family Formicidae)

Although small, key features are visible:

  • Narrow waist (petiole) → typical of ants
  • Bent (elbowed) antennae
  • Defined head + compact thorax
  • Presence of wings
