Jaguar Jade Pendant set in 950 silver. Handmade. Jadeite jade, called jaguar for its dark green color. This jade is mined in Guatemala.
Jade was more valuable to the Maya than gold.
It was the connection to the afterlife, to life after death, to the divine and sacred. It was also a symbol of power, status, and nobility.
Due to its hardness, it was difficult to carve and work, and it was also a scarce stone, very difficult to obtain, which is why it was more valued than gold, which is malleable and there was a greater quantity of it at that time.
Upon death, the bodies of noble people were adorned with masks, breastplates, and jewelry made of jade, as is the case of the ruler 'Pakal the Great' in Palenque, Chiapas.
It was believed that by adorning the body, the soul of the deceased could travel protected through the underworld and connect with the gods in the afterlife. It was also considered a symbol of resurrection.
Jade, because of its green color, was also associated with nature, vegetation, abundance, wisdom, purity, and protection.
