The Aztecs called the opal "vitzitziltecpatl" which means "hummingbird stone" because of its resemblance to the plumage of this bird. They also called it "Quetzalitztlipyollitli" which translates as "bird of paradise stone."
The Greeks believed that the opal granted the power of foresight and associated it with the tears of joy that the god Zeus shed after defeating the Titans.
