Purple Star Sapphire Pendant

Purple sapphire forms when traces of vanadium, or a combination of chromium, iron, and titanium, are included in the corundum structure during crystallization.

These elemental impurities are integrated into the structure of the aluminum oxide (corundum) and give the sapphire its characteristic purple hue, which can vary from pale lavender to deep violet.

In addition, this sapphire reflects a 6-pointed star, which is formed by an optical phenomenon called asterism, caused by needle-shaped rutile inclusions within the stone.

When light hits these perfectly aligned inclusions, it reflects and refracts, creating the star pattern visible on the surface of the sapphire when it is cabochon-cut.
