Amber is a resin exuded from the pores of a tree called 'Guapinol' in Simojovel, Chiapas.
The amber found deep underground in Simojovel is believed to date back 20 to 25 million years.
When a tree's branches break, or if it receives a wound caused by an insect or animal, it exudes resin to cover the wound and prevent the spread of fungi and pathogens.
Because the resin is sticky, insects or pieces of branches can become trapped. Upon contact with the sun, the resin hardens and solidifies in a fossilization process that can take thousands to millions of years.
Today, miners descend into very deep caves where they extract raw amber, which is then polished with sandpaper to give us the beauty and characteristic color of amber.
Symbolically, amber represents protection against negative energies, transformation, purification, resilience, vitality, creativity, etc.
