Inspired by the legacy of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, these exclusive lenses are handcrafted in brass and incorporate authentic natural black obsidian mirrors, a volcanic stone admired for centuries for its deep black color, natural shine, and extraordinary cultural significance.

For the Aztec civilization, obsidian was a sacred material. Polished mirrors, known in Nahuatl as tezcatl, were made from it, appreciated for their reflective surface and deep spiritual symbolism.

The tezcatl was closely related to Tezcatlipoca, one of the most important deities in the Aztec world. His name comes from the Nahuatl words tezcatl (mirror) and poctli (smoke), meaning "Smoking Mirror."

Tezcatlipoca was considered the lord of the night, the God of destiny, knowledge, and transformation.

WHAT WERE OBSIDIAN MIRRORS USED FOR? 🧙🏾‍♂️🔮⚫️

Ancient Aztec priests used obsidian mirrors (tezcatl) to enter states of contemplation and seek answers about the future, interpret omens, and receive messages from the gods.

It was believed that the dark and shiny surface of the mirror allowed access to a spiritual plane, where events that had not yet occurred could be revealed. Therefore, the mirror was seen as a kind of portal, a symbol of hidden knowledge.

The Mayans used obsidian to make various objects, including some polished mirrors. Mirrors were part of the ceremonial life of the elite and were associated with rituals, prestige, and divination practices.

The Mirror and Tradition:

Today, in various regions of Mexico, the tradition of using obsidian mirrors during solar eclipse observations continues. This practice, passed down from generation to generation, is part of the cultural heritage associated with this extraordinary material and reflects the link that obsidian maintains with Mexican traditions.

However, obsidian mirrors are not ISO 12312-2 certified, an international standard applicable to filters specifically designed for direct solar observation. Therefore, this product should not be considered a certified device for solar eclipse observation.

Width of the lenses: 12.5 cm

Length of the lenses: 14.5 cm

Care:

Do not get wet.

Polish with metal polishing paste (e.g., yellow Dialux or white Dialux) and a microfiber cloth. Rub until it regains its golden color.
