Mexican Fire Opal

This pendant features a natural Mexican fire opal, handcrafted in 950 silver. Its intense, translucent orange hue allows light to pass through the stone, revealing red flashes within that seem to ignite with every movement.

🌋🌧️ Fire Opal Formation

Mexican fire opals form in volcanic environments, primarily in states like Querétaro and Jalisco.

Unlike minerals that crystallize directly from magma (like obsidian), opals form after volcanic activity through a slower process:

• Rainwater infiltrates volcanic rocks (like rhyolites)

• This water carries dissolved silica

• Over time, it deposits into cavities and cracks within the rock

• The water slowly evaporates, leaving behind hydrated silica (opal)

• The silica creates well-organized microspheres within the opal, which diffract light and create the internal play-of-color.

• This process can take thousands to millions of years

 Why is it orange or red? 🟠🔴

The orange, red, or yellow tone is primarily due to traces of iron (iron oxides).

 These particles absorb certain wavelengths of light and allow warm tones to pass through → orange, amber, red.

The higher the concentration and type of iron 👇🏼

• 🟡 Yellow → lower iron concentration
• 🟠 Orange → medium iron concentration
• 🔴 Red → higher iron concentration

• ❌ Do not get wet

Opals, in general, should not get wet because some can be hydrophane, and by absorbing water, they lose their original shine and color.

• Clean silver when it starts to darken with metal polishing paste. E.g.: white Dialux or black Dialux and a microfiber cloth. Rub until the silver shine is restored.
