For the Aztec civilization, obsidian was a sacred material. It was used to make polished mirrors known in Nahuatl as tezcatl, prized for their reflective surface and deep spiritual symbolism.

The tezcatl was closely related to Tezcatlipoca, one of the most important deities in the Aztec world. His name comes from the Nahuatl words tezcatl (mirror) and poctli (smoke), therefore meaning “Smoking Mirror”.

Tezcatlipoca was considered the lord of the night, the God of destiny, knowledge, and transformation.

WHAT WERE OBSIDIAN MIRRORS USED FOR? 🧙🏾♂️🔮⚫️

Ancient Aztec priests used obsidian mirrors (tezcatl) to enter states of contemplation and seek answers about the future, interpret omens, and receive messages from the gods.

It was believed that the dark and brilliant surface of the mirror allowed access to a spiritual plane, where events not yet occurred could be revealed. Therefore, the mirror was seen as a kind of portal, a symbol of hidden knowledge.

The Mayans used obsidian to make various objects, including some polished mirrors. Mirrors were part of the elite's ceremonial life and were associated with rituals, prestige, and divination practices.

The mirror and tradition:

Currently, in various regions of Mexico, the tradition of using obsidian mirrors during solar eclipse observation continues. This practice, passed down from generation to generation, is part of the cultural heritage associated with this extraordinary material and reflects the link between obsidian and Mexican traditions.

However, obsidian mirrors do not have ISO 12312-2 certification, an international standard applicable to filters specifically designed for direct observation of the Sun. Therefore, this product should not be considered a certified device for observing solar eclipses.

Care:

Do not get wet.

Polish with metal polishing paste (e.g., Dialux yellow or Dialux white) and a microfiber cloth. Rub until it regains its golden color.
